In an effort to expand its product offerings and support long-term growth, North Carolina-based food distributor Southern Foods sought to transform an 88,000-square-foot vacant warehouse shell in Greensboro into a state-of-the-art, USDA-grade food processing facility.
To create a safe and sanitary environmental ideal for the highly regulated food industry, integrated design-build firm A M King knew it was critical to choose a durable flooring system that would accommodate the hygienic, slip-resistant requirements and hot-water washdowns typical of a food manufacturing space. To meet this need, Stonhard’s seamless urethane flooring solutions were installed throughout the distributor’s highly specialized food processing rooms.
During the installation process, Stonhard was able to offer flexible availability to accommodate the new facility’s aggressive construction schedule. Its Stonclad UT non-porous, antibacterial seamless flooring system was installed across 12,500 square feet of space, including the cheese aging room, meat/seafood processing and gowning areas, and department offices. The flooring was then coated with Stonkote HT4 two-component, 100% solids epoxy to provide long-term chemical and abrasion resistance while ensuring superior cleanability.
Servicing much of the Southeast Region of the U.S., Southern Foods now functions as a full-service premium meats, seafood, artisanal cheese and global specialty goods supplier and custom processor. The new facility allows the company to handle larger volumes while lowering repair, maintenance and overall production costs—thereby bringing more competitive pricing to the marketplace.
