In Nelson Mandela’s renowned words, “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” As a testament to this philosophy, StonCor Africa sponsors educational programs, known locally as “learnerships,” that are aimed at helping to uplift impoverished youth living in rural communities across South Africa. For these children and their families, the reality of living in deep rural South Africa means they must build their own homes and farm their own food—all while lacking access to basic municipal services like fresh water and electricity.
Through these learnership programs, disadvantaged youth across South Africa have the opportunity to gain an education and improve their employment prospects with structured learning. Since April 2017, StonCor Africa’s sponsorship has made education available to nearly 300 youth learners through a practical curriculum that offers a variety of courses ranging from basic business management for sole proprietors to nature conservation. Ultimately, these learnerships aim to cultivate job-ready adults who can leverage their educations and skillsets to create businesses that will help build a thriving community over the long run.
