Located at the former site of the Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, SoFi Stadium is the new home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers professional football teams. In order to get it ready for the 2020 National Football League (NFL) season, the stadium underwent massive construction to transform it into a state-of-the-art facility featuring the latest technology and expanded capacity.
During the construction process, Euclid Chemical’s TUF-STRAND™ SF product was installed at a dosage rate of 5 lb/yd³ (3 kg/m³)—serving as a synthetic macrofiber reinforcement for the topping slabs of the stadium’s upper-level decks. Used as an alternative for conventional steel and welded wire mesh, fiber-reinforced concrete eliminates the risk for corrosion by providing improved crack control for the topping slabs.
As a result, Euclid’s TUF-STRAND SF synthetic macrofibers significantly reduced construction costs by eliminating the time and labor needed to crane lift and install conventional steel or welded wire mesh. In addition, the stadium is now able to regularly seat 70,240 spectators, with the ability to expand its capacity to accommodate an additional 30,000 people for special events.
Now the largest stadium in the NFL, SoFi Stadium officially opened its doors to the public on September 8, 2020, in time to kick off its first regular NFL season. Setting the new standard in stadium construction, the 3.1-million-square-foot facility is slated to host a variety of iconic events, including the NFL’s Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the College Football Playoff Championship in 2023, and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games in 2028.
