As a mom of five kids, Jessica McCord’s family is already big. But when you add her Rust-Oleum “family,” it’s even bigger.
McCord works at Rust-Oleum’s facility in Rockford, Illinois. The plant manufactures Modern Masters, Testors and Anita’s Craft paints, along with other Rust-Oleum branded products.
She’s in her fifth year at Rust-Oleum and works as a paint bottle leader. One of her responsibilities is to make sure labels are applied correctly. Many of those need to be applied by hand. It’s not uncommon for McCord to label more than 3,000 bottles in a day. Perfection is her goal.
“I really take pride in being efficient,” McCord said. “I’ll always take the time to make sure things are perfect. I strive for zero mistakes.”
McCord’s shift starts at 6 a.m. The pace on the floor can be frenetic, but having supportive coworkers gets her through the day.
“We all have each other’s backs,” she said. “Everybody helps everybody. We’re like family.”
In her spare time, McCord is a DIYer and avid user of Rust-Oleum products. “I just used Milk Paint Finish to transform a dark brown table and gave it a beachy look,” she said. “It turned out great!”
In the day-to-day tasks, it’s easy for some associates to get caught up in the details and forget about the big picture. McCord is the exception. She reminds herself it’s about Rust-Oleum’s consumers.
“I want to get a good-quality product out the doors for our customers,” she said. “They’re the reason we have our jobs.”
