RPM’s Green Belt Training Program Drives Manufacturing Efficiencies

Through its companywide Green Belt training program, RPM aims to maximize the gains of its MS-168 manufacturing system by pursuing operating efficiencies across the enterprise with a continuous improvement mindset. The Green Belt certification recognizes individuals who have demonstrated Six Sigma methodology during process improvement projects.

In mid-September, RPM hosted an in-person Green Belt training workshop at its headquarters in Medina, Ohio. By utilizing a systemic, problem-solving methodology, the Green Belt program identifies new opportunities to increase operational efficiency, reduce lead times, streamline the use of materials and generate cost savings for the company. This year’s Green Belt training had 12 employees from across DAP, Rust-Oleum, Tremco, Euclid Chemical and Bison.

“I have a strong background in chemical engineering and sustainability, which are very much founded within the same principles as the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt training,” said Jerry Gomez, an EHS and sustainability specialist for RPM’s Modern Recreational Technologies business. “It’s been a great way to enhance my problem-solving skills and made me a better leader at managing these types of projects on site.”

“The greatest takeaway from this training is that we’re actually improving our skillsets to where we can run FIT events and improve processes on site, without having continuous improvement leaders with us,” added Brandon Basch, production manager at Euclid Chemical.

Debra Keller, vice president of continuous improvement at RPM, works closely with all of the manufacturing facilities across the enterprise in order to implement the MS-168 operational efficiency program. Since kicking off its Green Belt training two years ago, RPM has successfully certified seven Green Belts and generated a total of $4 million in annual cost savings.

Several Green Belt training workshops are hosted at RPM’s headquarters throughout the year. Please contact Debra Keller at dkeller@rpminc.com if you are interested in attending an upcoming session.
